Fruit trees can be divided into different types: pip fruit trees and stone fruit trees. Pip fruits include apple and pear trees, whereas stone fruit trees include plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots, damsons and cherries.

When preparing for planting for fruit trees, ensure the planting hole is of an adequate size - not less than 70cm wide and 25cm deep to ensure an adequate amount of compost material is added.

If you plant the trees in a grassed zone, clear a 70cm zone around the tree so that enough water can get to the roots of the fruit tree. Apply general fertilizer in the Spring.

Pip fruit are best pruned in the winter, while stone fruit must be pruned in Summer to reduce the risk of fungal disease.
