| If your free tomato offers are wearing a little thin on your neighbours, re-impress them with your gardening skills by growing... melons! Sow at the end of April in small pots with standard compost. Plant out in a greenhouse when 2 leaves have sprouted. Use your "home-made" compost to surround the seedlings, and create some support such as a piece of string. Tie the strongest shoots to the support and pinch out the side branches. Use drip irrigation to water. Once the flowers have formed you should take a small paintbrush and lightly brush each flower in turn to aid pollination. This job is best carried out mid day when the humidity is high. Support growing melons with string baskets, and feed weekly with tomato fertiliser. Remember, keep conditions as humid as possible. |
